Our Story
Co-Founders Michael Wells and Nate Bourg met in 2016 and bonded over a shared love of wine. Nate was working on a new project, The Academy, a social club based in the historic Castro neighborhood. A certified sommelier, Michael had just moved to San Francisco and became The Academy's first employee.
In the years that followed, Nate and Michael created a thriving community of wine enthusiasts at The Academy. Michael's deep wine knowledge, coupled with Nate's business and marketing prowess, made them the perfect team.
In 2022, Nate and Michael decided to take the show on the road. The two met their European counterpart in Carlos Ramos, a travel agent and fellow gay sommelier based in Barcelona, and decided to plan a trip to Spain. That following year, Nate, Michael, and Carlos led a group of thirty travelers through Northern Spain's most prestigious wine regions.
The inaugural tour was such a hit, the trio immediately got to work planning another one, this time to France. In 2025, the team led another transformational trip through the world's most prized vineyards from Champagne to Provence and everywhere in between.
After sharing some of the world's most celebrated wines and cultivating memories around them, the community of travelers became quite close. The lasting bonds of friendship that were cultivated became the best part of the travel experience. Building a community like this inspired the team, and Havel Travel Club was born.
